MailSafi Glossary of Terms
Domain Name System (DNS)
DNS stands for Domain Name System. It can be considered the telephone directory of the internet. People access information online by typing domain names such as mailsafi.com or kaluari.com.
A DNS translates or resolves a hostname (e.g., www.mailsafi.com) into a language of numbers that a computer can understand (i.e., an IP address).
What is the role of DNS in sending emails?
DNS holds information that helps with email delivery, authentication, and encryption.
• Email delivery - The domain name in the email address is matched to the IP address. This enables email delivery.
• Email authentication and encryption - DNS records like SPF, DKIM, and DMARC verify the senders as well as identify and encrypt the email content to ensure all emails are secured.
